| As in many of the seawalls which failed during the 2004 active hurricane season, there were apparent problems already existing which caused this seawall failure.
This seawall failure occured some time prior to our becoming involved. The engineer determined that adding additional sheet pile to the already existing wall would act as a reinforcing element. The existing wall had two sets of concrete sheets, one set inside another. Upon visual inspection, there appeared to be no filter fabric installed. Several large voids had formed underneath and behind the seawall, which allowed sand to be washed out. Once the system, though quite massive in size, was tested by hurricane force waves, it failed catastrophically, and required replacement.
As of the fall of 2005, in Brevard County and the City of Satelite Beach, replacement of even existing seawall structures is very limited and the great majority of applications would be denied permits.
The project was completed substantially prior to October 2005.
